Peace of mind

This is my entry for
mini_nanowrimo prompt #5. I didn't use any of the prompts this time. This scene actually is a missing bit from the
sga_flashfic piece I'm struggling to find an ending for. I pictured this scene around the time right before "Michael", because Carson's dedication had to have been a strain on the relationship. Maybe I'll do something more with this later. For now I don't mind sharing.
Laura grinned, "I'll ask Miko tonight before my dinner date."
"With Carson?" Rodney sighed.
"Is that a problem?" Laura replied. "You're not jealous, are you?"
Rodney scowled, "Of course not. I just don't want him to get hurt, that's all." He'd seen Carson after they'd returned from Hoff. Carson's heart had broken into a million pieces after Purna died. Carson hadn't even had a chance with her. Now he was throwing himself into a relationship again. Only Rodney could see how badly this could end. Marines didn't usually live to a ripe old age in the Stargate program.
"I doubt that'll happen," Laura said. "I'm more likely to be the one left waiting."
"Is everything okay between the two of you?" Rodney asked. He hadn't had any indication that there was trouble in paradise.
Laura hesitated. "Carson is sweet, really, he's just so distracted lately. I knew he was dedicated to his work, but lately he spends all his time in the lab or the infirmary or in meetings. He can't talk to me about any of it either."
Rodney finished, "So you feel left out?"
Laura nodded. "I know it's dumb..."
"Dumb would be not letting it bother you," Rodney said. "I'll talk to him, if that'll help."
"You'll talk to him about me?" Laura said. "Why? What's in it for you?"
"Peace of mind," Rodney admitted.
