This is for [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo prompt #6 using the visual prompt. This comes from the Nano novel I'm working on this month. I hadn't originally intended to use other SGA people besides Rodney and Laura but somehow the others snuck in the back way. Definitely my most oddball ship yet.

Old Photos

The fireplace mantle was covered with family photographs. Miko Kusanagi took down the black and white photograph of her late husband, taken while he was still in the military. He had always looked so handsome in his uniform. Some women hadn't liked his brusque manner. She fondly remembered the first time he strode into the smoke filled rooms of the Pegasus Cabaret. She had asked if she could check his hat. He hadn't laughed when she'd needed her reading glasses to see the receipt.

The Pegasus always had its share of former military men back then. The girls had a private running joke that their boss Elizabeth Weir liked to collect powerful men like playing cards. But they never expressed that sentiment too loudly. Elizabeth was a fair boss, but she could also be a tough one, expecting the best from everyone. Elizabeth had more than earned their respect and their trust. But it didn't stop the speculation.

All of the men had their place in Elizabeth's heart. Jack first showed up at the Pegasus before he disappeared on a routine mission. Then came Sumner and Everett, the two old Marine drinking buddies with bottomless appetites. They never went anywhere without the other. They'd even died together in a nasty Blood Alley bar fight protecting a sailor on leave. All the girls swooned over John's good looks and elusive charm, but he never reciprocated. Besides her husband, John spent the most time in the Pegasus. The dashing pilot came around often enough and usually for the flimsiest of reasons to make anyone wonder. Ronon eventually stayed around to help Teyla watching the bar, though she really didn't need the assistance. And of course there was her Stephen. She'd assumed he'd remained out of loyalty for Elizabeth, but had been surprised when he stayed for her instead.

Miko put the photograph back on the mantlepiece, along with the newer ones of her children and grandchildren. The faces were shining and smiling, captured in that moment. She pushed two photographs to the side to reveal a small photograph usually unnoticed among the others. The picture showed her old rundown neighborhood in Shanghai. Stephen once asked her why she kept around such a photograph when so many good memories surrounded her. She'd told him that not many photographs existed of the old days, so she treasured the ones she had, even the bad photographs. The memories were not all good, but they were not all bad either.
