Trail of the Ancients

Here is the latest entry for
mini_nanowrimo based on the photo prompt. I'm actually considering extending this little piece, because now I'm curious about this world.
The Marines were getting tired of British Columbia. Every world they visited looked like Pacific Northwestern forest. Even Rodney grumbled that if he'd wanted to see this, he could have just gone to stay with his sister. At least she wouldn't have people shooting at him. Having met his sister, Major Lorne wasn't so certain of that.
So when the team dialed up the next world, no one expected anything different. The rocky terrain had caught them off-guard. Even the loudest Marines looked around in confusion. This was new territory for them. No forests to hide in, just cliffs and ravines. Green hills had been replaced with dark orange buttes and crystal blue skies. Every mountain looked like a stone carving with a story untold. Old window arches looked like a natural made stargates.
For awhile, no one spoke. Even Rodney was more intent on documenting this new world than chattering away. Sgt Gutierrez spotted a settlement hiding underneath a large cliff wall. Lorne had seen a similar one in Mesa Verde when he was younger. That one had long been abandoned by its occupants. As a kid, he'd tried vainly to imagine how it would look at its height. All he needed was look at this world. This one was thronging with life.
Somehow this cliff palace had escaped from the Wraith.
Was this an old Ancient settlement? Or were there other secrets under the cliffs?
Author's Note: On a number of odd occasions, I've noticed little connections between the Stargate Ancients and the American Southwest. The Arches National Park's window arch looks indeed like a natural Stargate. And Utah has its own "Trail of the Ancients". So maybe it's not that unlikely that they built a cliffside settlement like Mesa Verde. Or something like that...
