Summary: Even the Renuzeit don't believe in coincidences.
"The healers swear Viviva will make a full recovery," Claudius began. "Her shoulder wasn't too badly injured, so they were able to set it normally. They did ask if they should start preparing a renewal pool for this one soon."
Livia shook her head. "She's far too young for renewal. We'll let her heal normally." She leaned back against her chair, trying not to let relief show on her flawless features. "What about the others? Have there been any further injuries?"
"Those are all the ones I've heard about directly, four in all," Claudius recounted all the other accidents to other Court foster girls. "You do agree that number is alarming. Not that I've uncovered any proof that they were done deliberately, but…"
"You think all these incidents are related," Livia stated. Both were thinking along the same lines. "They are all so young, prone to any number of injuries." She tried to keep her tone light, but the situation had shaken her. The first one she could have excused as accidental for the girl in question was clumsy by nature, but as the injuries to the foster girls mounted, she started to worry. Viviva's fall from her horse while out riding had been the final straw. Livia was the leader of the Renuzeit, chosen to keep them safe, but she was also a mother. "I promised their families, Claudius. I gave the Alecto-Ran's word no harm would come to them."
"I know you did," Claudius soothed. "Maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps I'm a paranoid old man…"
"And I'm a paranoid mother," Livia countered. "In fairness, we both have our reasons. We've both seen the lengths some of families will go. They still cling to their old fears. The climate at Court hasn't changed as much as I'd hoped when we made the Crossing to Vindobona. Perhaps I expected too much." She admitted. "I still wonder if I made the right decision, keeping my daughter close by, rather than sending her away."
"Then the two of you would never have known each other. After your son, I wouldn't ask you to endure that again." Claudius had seen this black mood before, watched how grief consumed Livia. Now he was questioning his own decisions, whether he should have stayed alongside his family. There was time for judgment later. He knew his duties as well. "Alecto-Ran, you have done everything you could to protect her."
"Clearly not enough," Livia snapped. "I want a new bodyguard for her, General. Find someone you trust, perhaps someone from your military days. I will have my daughter safe. Nothing else matters."
"I will find someone," Claudius promised.
