Verse: Two Princesses
Title: You Can Take the Cook out of the Kitchen...
Word Count: 338 words
Prompt: Free square/ Baking (cookies)
Summary: "You want me to bake cookies?"
"I am a fully qualified pastry chef," Vicky reminded her older sister. "I have access to professional kitchen. I can make petit fours, I can make candy, I can make the most grandiose concoctions imaginable, and you want me to bake cookies? Cookies!" She repeated with disbelief.
"I thought they’d be easy," Stephanie shrugged. "You’re always telling me about the long hours you spend in the restaurant. So when you asked me what to bring for the Sara’s birthday party I thought you’d prefer something less... involved."
"Point taken." Vicky grimaced. "I do go on about my job, don't I?" She sighed. "What kind of cookies do you want me to bring? Which characters does Sara like? I can make wonderful iced sugar cookies."
"Honestly, Victorene," Stephanie laughed, "what Sara wants is to see her favorite aunt, nothing more. But she is partial to plain ordinary chocolate chip cookies."
"You mean her mother is partial to chocolate chips," Vicky muttered. "I remember how you used to sneak cookies out of the Palace kitchens."
"I’m going to be at the party, too," Stephanie said somewhat defensively, "why shouldn’t I have a treat that I'll enjoy too?" She shrugged. "Besides you’ve seen how my cookies turn out."
Vicky shuddered. Her older sister was gifted in many ways, but cooking was decidedly not one of them. Her one notable attempt at baking cookies had yielded blackened oblongs, bearing little resemblance to the perfect little spheres in the cookbook pictures. Her sister had sobbed, not understanding what she had done wrong, until her sister patiently explained how the oven controls worked. Stephanie had been fortunate she hadn’t burned the kitchen down in her cooking attempt. She had been henceforth forbidden from setting foot in the Palace kitchens, even to check on preparations for events.
Under the circumstances, Vicky resolved to make two batches of cookies, one for her sister and one for the party. Perhaps she’d add some sprinkles to the second batch. Even aunts needed to stretch their imagination a little.
