Yesterday I focused on getting back on track with my actual Nano, rather than a prompt. I've shifted backwards in the timeline of my wacky AU to how Rodney and Laura met. To paraphrase Indiana Jones, why did it have to be Nazis?

Here is my entry for [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo #10 with a non-SGA piece for change. An X-men fan like me couldn't resist today's quote. So this piece is set at the very end of X2. Pretend X3 doesn't exist.

Akali Lake is still again.

No signs of the traumatic events that transpired here are evident. All traces of Stryker's lair have been swept away in the rushing onslaught of water. The dam accident has been covered up, attributed to a mechanical error at the switches. The mutant connection isn't mentioned.

Underneath the clear waters lies the body of a heroine. In her single minded attempt to save her friends, she sacrificed her own life. By accepted the sheer amount of power flowing through her veins, she became what she feared most. So power is simply too much for a single person to bear, too much to comprehend. The waters crashing down on her felt like sweet release from the torment she had faced in her mind.

That should have been the end of the story. But destiny sometimes has other plans for you.

A single orb of energy pulsates around her body, giving her new life. The golden orb turns fiery red. The ashes of the old give way to the new. When she is ready, she spreads her wings, gliding effortlessly over the water's surface. She can revel in her new existence, free to push the boundaries without human limitations. She is everything and she is nothing, both life and death, all wrapped in an unbreakable cycle.

With death comes life.

With rebirth comes a phoenix.

Phoenixes that play here once, so that the place was named for them,
Have abandoned it now to this desolated river;
