Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Americans on my friends list. This is another entry for the
mini_nanowrimo set during third season after "McKay & Mrs. Miller". I'm sure they should have had this discussion before this season, but in light of meeting his sister, it made more sense for later.
Thanksgiving
"I heard some of the Marines talking about a great feast planned for this evening," Teyla commented. "Was there some event I was not aware of? Some dignitaries visiting Atlantis perhaps?"
"No," Rodney replied, "that would be the American contingent celebrating Thanksgiving. Even in the Pegasus Galaxy, there shall be turkey and gravy and cranberry sauce and all that artery clogging good stuff." He said. "Although the pie is supposed to be quite good." After realizing Teyla had no idea what he was talking about, he explained. "Thanksgiving is a holiday where they come from. It was supposed to honor some of the first settlers who founded America, but it's become an all-purpose family gathering. Family and friends gather around for a large feast and watch football afterwards." No doubt Sheppard would take over the big screen tonight to watch whatever game someone had sent on the Daedalus' latest care package.
Teyla asked, "Do your people celebrate this Thanksgiving as well?"
"We do, but Canadians are more sensible about things," Rodney replied. "We celebrate Thanksgiving a month earlier to coincide with the harvest. But then we don't have history with the Pilgrims to confuse things." He shrugged. "In my house, Thanksgiving just seemed like another excuse for the family to get together and argue."
"What would you argue about?" Teyla frowned. She couldn't imagine how having family together would bring out such conflict.
Rodney laughed, "Anything and everything! I think we would have argued whether the sun rose in the east or the west, if we could have." He leaned against the console, remembering those times. "Don't me wrong, Teyla. In our weird way, I do think we loved each other. We just couldn't be in the same room together."
"You must miss your family," Teyla offered.
Rodney hesitated for a brief moment. "I miss my sister. Just when I was getting to know her, we were seperated again. I miss getting to know Maddie and trying to understand Caleb." He sighed. "The price I pay for exploring another galaxy."
"But your parents... do you not miss them as well?"
Rodney didn't hesitate there. "Not nearly as much."
